2021 Nissan LEAF vs. Toyota Prius Prime

Overview

If you've decided to do your bit for nature by driving a more eco-friendly vehicle, two options may be on your radar: the 2021 Nissan LEAF and the Toyota Prius Prime. The former is an all-electric vehicle that offers a spacious interior, a comprehensive suite of standard driver-assist systems, and a choice of two peppy powertrains. On the other hand, the Prius Prime is a hybrid plug-in that delivers a fuel-efficient and equally safe ride. If you're not sure which vehicle to choose, here's a short overview to help you decide.

Powertrains

The Nissan LEAF is available in two models: the LEAF and the LEAF Plus. The standard LEAF is powered by a 147-horsepower electric motor that pairs with a 40kWh battery to provide you with 236 pound-feet of torque and an estimated range of 149 miles. If you routinely drive longer distances, opt for a LEAF Plus model, which comes with a 214-horsepower motor. The larger 62.0-kWh battery of this powertrain delivers an estimated range of 226 miles. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission and two electric motors power all Prius Prime models. The powertrain delivers a combined 121 horsepower and an all-electric range of 25 miles.

Technology

With the Nissan LEAF, you receive a standard 8-inch infotainment system that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, USB ports, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and four speakers. All trims comes standard with an extensive range of driver-assist systems, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane intervention, forward-collision warning, active ride control, and automatic emergency braking. The Prime's standard infotainment system is similarly equipped to that of the LEAF, except that it features a 7-inch display and six speakers. The Prius Prime also boasts a comprehensive suite of driver-assist features, which include lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, and pre-collision mitigation.

Cabin

The spacious cabin of the Nissan LEAF provides adult-friendly seats for five and one of the largest cargo areas in its class. With all seats up you receive 23.6 cubic feet, while folding down the rear seats opens up a maximum cargo area of 30 cubic feet. Standard interior features include cloth upholstery, push-button start, and automatic climate control. With the Prius Prime, you get a smaller cargo area of 19.8 cubic feet, due to a large battery pack under the cargo floor. Comfortable seats for up to five passengers are provided, however. Standard features include cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control. Since the Nissan LEAF offers more powerful powertrains, a spacious interior, and impressive standard technology and safety features, it takes this round.
